How to Get to PNC Park:

  1. Closest Airport: Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)
    • PIT is a hub for Southern Airways Express and a focus city for Allegiant Air. PIT also services Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines, as well as the big 3 via their major hubs.
    • PIT is 17 miles from PNC Park. The distance from PNC Park to Pittsburgh’s airport is one of the more sizable distances in the country and public transportation is limited in the greater Pittsburgh area. Renting a car is not a bad option for visiting PNC Park. However, traffic getting into/out of Pittsburgh is normally bottlenecked by the many tunnels and bridges of the city during rush hour.
    • PIT is an hour bus ride via the Port Authority of Allegheny County route 28X Airport Flyer getting off at the Liberty Avenue at Market Street stop. Please note this then requires a half mile walk across the Allegheny River over one of the hundreds of bridges in Pittsburgh.
      • A one way ticket is $2.75 for an adult
      • A day pass is $7 for an adult
  2. Driving Directions: Pittsburgh is the largest city in western Pennsylvania, nestled in among the convergence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, which forms the Ohio River. Therefore, Pittsburgh is home to 446 bridges, as well as some windy and hilly roadways. Additionally, as mentioned above, these bridges and tunnels can become highly congested at peak volume times so do pay attention to the time of day when driving in and around Pittsburgh. Finally, please note there are several tolled roads as part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike that go around Pittsburgh, namely I-76, PA Route 66, PA Route 43 and PA Route 576
    • From the North and South, Pittsburgh is accessible via I-79 and I-76.
      • If you are coming from the north, Pittsburgh is 130 miles from Erie, PA via I-79. If you are coming from the northwest, Pittsburgh is 140 miles from Cleveland, OH via I-76.
      • If you are coming from the south, Pittsburgh is 75 miles from Morgantown, WV via I-79.
    • From the West and East, Pittsburgh is accessible via I-70.
      • If you are coming from the west, Pittsburgh is 190 miles from Columbus, OH via I-70.
      • If you are coming from the east, Pittsburgh is 200 miles from Harrisburg, PA via I-76/I-70.

Pittsburgh

Pittsburghers, or Yinzers as they like to be called, will make sure you fully understand how fond they are of their many bridges and rivers before you’re done with the city. To be honest, I don’t blame them. I would highly recommend squeezing in some time to walk across a couple of Pittsburgh’s many bridges, stopping along the way to take pictures of all the bridges crossing the three rivers, the city of Pittsburgh, as well as any attractions on the river banks. For example, PNC Park and it’s neighbor Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, sit along the western bank of the Allegheny River, roughly a half mile from its convergence with the Monongahela River (say that name 3 times fast) to form the Ohio River. Besides being home to an MLB and NFL franchise, the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL also call the city home and play at nearby PPG Paints Arena next to Duquesne University just outside of Downtown Pittsburgh.

If you’re looking for other things to do in Pittsburgh, those Yinzers have you covered. Make sure to check out the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the Mount Washington Neighborhood (accessible via trolley car with an incredible overlook of the city), Carnegie Museum of National History, the Andy Warhol Museum, Point State Park, Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, and one of my personal favorites, the Cathedral of Learning. Lastly, for those Mac Miller fans, make sure to take the time and stroll through Blue Slide Playground, inspiration for his Blue Slide Park album and a tribute to his work.
